You know what i hate?
I received this rant from my friend today via e-mail. He doesn't have a blog or anything, so I thought I should post it for him. People in Seattle are very outspoken politically and often assume that everyone has the same beliefs. I - sorry (or not) to say - don't really care or follow politics, so I found this a superb reaction:
Dear Meloknee:
Do you know what I hate?
When people get on the elevators and mouth off some political rhetoric expecting me to echo their sentiments but when I don't they look at me like I am some kind of freak.

Today my friend and I were returning from our break and this female coworker rode up with us. She saw the little news blurb-screen and GASPED saying "Oh my god!" like something horrible had happened. I asked what was wrong and she said "Alito was just accepted as a supreme court judge!" thinking I would echo her liberal sentiments. So I started flailing my arms about, saying " Oh my god we're all going to die, we're all going to die! Kiss personal freedom good bye!" in my best Homer Simpson-like sarcastic voice. Then she looked at me like I had killed a cat. If you don't want my overly sarcastic political opinion, don't give me yours.

What is going on??
I'm looking outside right now and it is raining, snowing and hailing all at the same time?! What is that all about? I told my dog she has to hold her pee all day because it's too miserable to go outside. If I were her I would have peed on the bed right then and there, but she just went back to sleep. Silly dog.

MySpace
So, about a year or two ago I started getting tons of emails from MySpace sent to my meloknee (at) hotmail (dot) com email address. There were friend requests and new comments every day. None of these
were for me, I use my gmail address for MySpace. It didn't really bother me because I never use that account for anything other than sign-up offers and whatnot. I suppose I could have sent this chick a message and told her she had entered the wrong email address, but I'm lazy and didn't really care. Plus, I figured she would eventually realize that she was not getting the emails. I guess she hasn't though. Today was my lucky day. She must have been logging in somewhere different or something and didn't remember her password, so she had her password emailed to her.
I now have full control over her MySpace account. I created a new email address for her so that they wouldn't be sent to me. Her new email address is stupidmeloknee@hotmail.com. Of course only I have the password and I also have the password to her MySpace account. Hmm...any ideas?

So What's Up With Me, you ask.
In general, I'm not feeling very funny or witty right now. This weather's really getting me down. I think I need to move back to Cali. I want to go on long bike rides through the rolling hills with the sun beating down on me. I want to lounge on the beach and watch the sun set.
Anyway, aside from that, I'm trying to adopt this dog:

Isn't she cute???? She's a 12-year-old schnoodle named Heidi. You can read more about her on petfinder.
I have been slammed with proofreading work, which is great; I wish it was like this all the time. I've also decided not to go to Library school. I'm now leaning towards taking a certificate program at the UW for editing. We'll see.
So, yeah, life's a little blah right now...
I'll try to be more charming, witty, clever and funny later.

comet karaoke
Last night alex and I went to karaoke night at the comet. This is always a fun night. Last night was no exception, in fact it was more fun than usual. We stayed until closing time and met a lot of really cool people. The comet is much more enjoyable now that there's no smoking -- well there is, but it's a very small area upstairs. One of the best things is that you can take your dog. Aggie loves karaoke night; she gets tons of attention. Last night she got more attention than usual; she got a song dedicated to her by "Nigel." He said, "This song is dedicated to the poodle who has remained amazingly calm despite all the retarded behavior." I don't remember the song though. Aggie also got to sit with the door man and eat beef jerky.
Now, if only we could get the nerve to actually sing.

Close to entering day 24. Day 24 of what? you ask. The 24th day straight of raining is only hours away. I thought that by this point, going on my 4th rainy season in Seattle, I'd be more adjusted, able to handle it. This year, it's driving me crazy though. I understand, it's rainier than usual, they are talking possible breaking of records, but that is still 10 days away. Last year was exceptionally dry, the ski resorts didn't even open, so put that with this year which is exceptionally wet and it's a big change.
Usually when it "rains" in seattle, it doesn't actually rain, it just mists. It mists so lightly that you're dry by the time you walk in the door. This rain spell though, it's actually raining, real rain. Houses are flooding, hillsides are collapsing, my shoes are getting ruined (the rainboots don't match all my outfits), the raincoat is losing it's waterproof coating.
On top of all the rain, it's still only light between the hours of 8-5. I can't seem to get up in the morning anymore. Maybe I'm coming down with a case of SAD. I just keep dreaming of beaches and sunshine, but all I have to look forward to is Fresno in April...it should be nice there though.
I am longing for the Seattle summer days, filled with sun and 18 hours of daylight. It's our little secret you know, summers in Seattle are pretty much the most fabulous summers of all. Of course they only last about two months and they are so dry that you wish for an overcast day so that you can have an excuse to sit inside with a good book. You feel guilty for wasting any of those few and precious summer days.
Oh, and one tiny piece of advice: If you are new to Seattle or coming for a visit, there's really only one thing you need to know; do not step on anything metal. Do not walk on manholes, utility boxes, or anything else on the street or sidewalk that is made of metal. You will fall.
This could very easily turn into a rant about seattlites and umbrellas, but I think I'll let that go for now.

High School Reunion
The big question of the moment is to go to the high school reunion, or not to go. They just announced the class of 1996 Buchanan High class reunion. It's going to be in June of this year. Wow, 10 years, that's amazing. In some ways it feels so long ago; in others just yesterday (okay, that's stretching it, but still...).
Up until a month or so ago, I wouldn't have even considered going. Now that my high school best friend, Erica, and I are back in contact, we've been considering it. We didn't even hang out with anyone we went to school with, so it's questionable who'd we know when we got there. Our senior year of high school (I only went to Buchanan my freshman and senior year) was definitely a life-changing year for me. Four people that were actively involved in my life died within a six-month period; one of those people was our high school newspaper teacher. Erica and I spent a great deal of time with Dana. Not only that, but the person driving the car that killed Dana was a kid Erica and I had gone to school with in junior high; I couldn't stand that snotty rich kid, "Spike."
So, the question is: Will this experience bring up old emotions that I don't want to deal with? Will this bring closure to parts of my life? Will Erica and I get drunk and do something stupid? That last one's probably a given. Hey Erica, remember sneaking up to your grandma's stash at the cabin in Shaver Lake???

Last night we went to see the helio sequence play at Chop Suey. It had been over a year since the last time I saw them play. They haven't released an album since 2004, Love and Distance. This band is absolutely amazing (they are friends with the modest mouse boys). There is so much energy on stage; it's awesome. The drummer, Benjamin Weikel is an absolute pleasure to watch perform. He seems to love what he is doing more than anyone or anything in the world. For a girl raised by a Bob Dylan loving father, you can't help but be charmed by Brandon Summers' harmonica playing.
Last night's show confirmed three things for me. One, the helio sequence totally rocks. Two, people in seattle should start loosening up at shows and try moving their feet, just a wee bit. Three, it's fun to tell frat boys to shut the f* up (especially when they actually do it).
So listen up Cali! the helio sequence is coming your way next week.
01-11 Detroit Bar Costa Mesa
01-12 Casbah, The San Diego
01-13 Spaceland Los Angeles
01-14 Howie & Sons Pizza Visalia
01-15 Rickshaw Stop San Francisco
Wow, how sad is it that Visalia gets shows and Fresno doesn't!!
Anyway, go, go, go, and take your dancing shoes.

There are a few things in life that I can always think about when I need a good laugh, or just a chuckle that brings a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
One: My junior high best friend, Lisa, and I used to lay on the bed or floor with our feet at opposite ends and our faces right next to each other. We would watch each other talk upside-down. Our favorite and funniest words to say were, mad, sad, dad, glad. This would create ridiculous sentences like, I get mad when my dad is sad and then i try a new fad and it makes me glad.
Two: Once, when my brother and I were roommates, we lived about a block away from Jack in the Box. This meant that we had quite a few midnight runs to Jack in the Box. We usually drove because the dining room closed at 12:00 and only the drive-thru was open (we also usually drove because we were in California and you never walk anywhere there). Well, one night my brother drove to JITB and decided to go in to order his food because they were still open and there was a long wait in the drive-thru. The next morning, he woke up and couldn't find his car anywhere in the apartment parking lot. He woke me up, oh my gosh someone stole my car!! We were both freaking out and about to call the police. We were talking, okay where did you park when you came home from JITB? He couldn't remember. All of a sudden it came back to him. He had walked home. He somehow managed to forget that he had drove there while he was inside and instead of getting in the car to come home, he just walked. Sure enough, his car was still in the parking lot.
Three: My friend KJ and our crazy antics. We would have all-nighters that consisted of Barqs rootbeer pounding, pool table dancing, Subway break-ins, taco bell feasting, and ice cube spitting.
All while laughing at red-faced, white pant, sock with sandal wearing boys.
Four: The time my family was posing for our annual photo in front of the Christmas tree that I always took using my tripod and camera on timer, and as I was running back before the timer went off I ripped one of the hugest, smelliest farts ever so that the photo is filled with my red-faced, laughing family!
Five: This one is actually very recent...

Goals for 2006
I don't really like to make New Year's resolutions; I believe they are just setting me up for failure. Not to mention, they are usually very open-ended and don't set you on any direct path. I instead make a Yearly To-Do List.
2006 To-Do List
1. Finish my HTML How-To Book in order to complete PerfectProofing.
2. Obtain a business license so that I can legitimately write off my business expenses.
3. Ride my bike as much as I did before my knee surgery.
4. Apply for Grad School.
5. Pay off medical bills.
Then I come up with a plan of attack:
1. By the end of February finish the HTML book.
2. Start paperwork for the business license by June 2006.
3. For Jan.-March, ride bike once a week; April-June, ride twice a week; July-Sept., ride three times a week; Oct.-Dec., ride four times a week (weather permitting).
4. Have the first draft of my personal statement written by March.
Decide which people I will ask for letters of rec. by April.
Return application by June.
5. Follow the budget created until med. bills are paid. After that, re-evaluate and look at remaining debt. Can you loosen the budget at this point?
So, that's my life. Man, I feel defeated already. Quitting smoking last year was easier!
