Ultimate Fighting
I'll let you all in on a little secret of mine; I'm a fan of ultimate fighting and mixed-martial arts. I love it; I can't help it. My interest in Ultimate Fighting started in my senior year of high school. I made friends with a group of kids that were totally into cage fighting. We'd get together to watch the fights and much to my dismay, I really enjoyed it.
This morning, while I was in Starbucks (yes, now that I don't live in seattle, I drink Starbucks), I walked in and lo and behold there is Chuck Liddell having his morning coffee, with a bit of an entourage. Liddell "The Iceman", is from San Luis Obispo, but his management company is based in Fresno. So every once in a while he comes to town and uses the same Gold's Gym as I do. ![]()
![]()
I was totally blushing, because I think he's kind of cute in that rough, tough, fighting machine sort of way. Then, in walks our Mayor Autry (you'd remember him best from In the Heat of the Night as Bubba), they sit down and have a little chat, which I find oddly amusing.
then, as sweet pea and I are walking back to Tri-Sport, I see Liddell sitting in Sport Clips waiting for a haircut and get excited again because that's right next door to the shop.
Anyway, after a minute or two, in walks The Iceman with entourage in tote into Tri-Sport! Of course, I was such a dumb girl that all I could to was smile, blush and giggle. Meanwhile my coworkers were trying to convince me to ask for an autograph, but I didn't have the nerve. He walked back out before I could even give him a free t-shirt or anything. Why do i have to be so lame???!!!
Still, it was the highlight of my day (which is only a few hours in).

I'm Back
I was reading the Fresno Bee today and read something that just made it impossible for me to not blog.
The article was about local brewpubs and restaurants. Alongside this article there was a little Q & A with the owner of Sequoia Brewing Co., which replaced the best brewery that Fresno ever had, Butterfields. I've yet to venture out to Sequoia, despite the fact that I try to patron mostly local joints in Fresno the land of chain restaurants. I've hear that neither their food nor beer is worth consuming.
Well today, I just might have discovered why it's not worth going to. When Michell Kendall, the owner of Sequoia Brewing Co. was aked what's the most expensive meal she's ever eaten, her answer was, "I'd rather go to KFC than eat somewhere expensive."
Oh, and when asked what her favorite beer brewed by someone else is, she replied that, "Growing up, I was a Coors Light person."
This, my friends, is the owner of the restaurant and brewpub.
And briefly, where I've been...
After moving back to Fresno, at first I didn't have much to write about. I didn't really do much or get out. I was a little embarrassed to be back! I also found out that many people here had been following everything in my life via my blog, but of course never actually bothered to email or call and say hi. This just really pissed me off. So I killed it.
Recently however, I have had lots to write about and to say, but first I had to go through the trouble of getting the blog back and working. I have lots of stories about the pain and suffering of getting ran into by a car and the even more pain of finding out that stupid chick doesn't have insurance, plus she just got out of prison.

how i long for thee, seattle
i'm sure it will all be fine once i get to san francisco but i'm beginning to wonder what the hell i was thinking...
fresno, one little question, have you heard of a thing called wireless internet??? or what about bike racks??? crosswalks, huh, what about crosswalks - you know, those things that you are supposed to stop before so that you don't run people over???
and if one more person says, "So, you brought the rain with you from seattle."
i have spent more time in three days in a starbucks than i did in four and a half years in seattle. starbucks is the only place that seems to have internet access. i know there are like two places that have free internet, but that's just not enough.
please, if anyone from fresno reads this and knows where a girl can get online, let me know. does fresno state have any wireless anywhere on campus???

Since I apparently have nothing better to do
I will post more about Fresno. You see, it's not all about murder and rape in the Central Valley. It's about God turning to Porn. This must be some sort of horrible joke. I'm not sure how this station is going to last on the air, but I hope it's long enough for me to get to hear it next time I'm there.
On a positive - sort of - note, tomorrow should end Fresno's 21-day heat wave of over 100 degree temperatures.
In Fresno County's morgue, the walk-in freezer was stuffed with bodies, with some piled on top of others, said Coroner Loralee Cervantes. With limited air conditioning, employees worked in sweltering heat as they investigated at least 22 possible heat-related deaths.Copyright 2006 The Associated Press
Although I'm really hoping to move back to California soon, I'm certainly happy that I'm not there now.

Today in Seattle, it's barely supposed to hit 70, and the weekend has a chance of showers and temperatures in the 60s. Finally my apartment is cooling off. This was the first morning that my bathroom didn't feel like a sauna. I'm actually considering cooking tonight!

Finally a cloudy day!
There aren't many times in a year living in Seattle when you wake up to clouds and thank god! Today was one of the few. Finally breaking the heatwave that's hit the country over the last week or so. I know, 97 degrees isn't that hot. However, in a city where it's a luxury to have air conditioning and even most businesses don't have it, 97 is hard to bear.
I live on the top floor of a nearly 100-year-old brick building. The sun hits my apartment until it sets, which up North isn't until 9:00 at night. I've been sitting on my couch in my underwear misting myself and the dogs in front of a fan; going to sleep with ice packs; Sunday even had to go to the parent's house to sit in their basement. I'm pretty sure that for the last four days it has reached at least 100 degrees in my place.
I do feel bad for my family and friends in Fresno; even if you have A/C and a swimming pool, this kind of heat going on and on is really hard to deal with. It ruins your appetite, you can't get out to exercise, you lose all energy to do anything. The swimming pool is as warm as a bathtub and you are constantly worried about how you can afford to pay an electric bill for a house that has the A/C and fans running 24 hours a day.
This is an excerpt from msn.com:
The heat has taken a deadly toll in California, where Fresno County Coroner Loralee Cervantes reported 10 possible heat-related deaths in her area, including a man in his 40s found on a lawn Sunday with a body temperature higher than 109 degrees. © 2006 The Associated Press
Yesterday Fresno broke the record high of 108 with a whopping 113! Today they are expecting 112, it's not even below 90 by midnight!! The worst is that although Fresno is usually a "dry heat" which makes everyone this it's bearable, the last week or so it's been overcast and humid with chances of rain. I've been calling my sister to make sure my grandma is using her A/C and not worrying about costs.
This summer has been horrible for California. When I was there in June, it was 108 in Fresno. Hopefully it will be over soon!
Anyway, enough complaining for me, I'm going to take the dogs on a nice long walk, and not worry about them dying :)

Fresno makes headlines again??!!
Fresno must really be trying to make a name for itself this year. Either that or maybe Fresnans are trying really hard to stop the city's growth and rising housing costs by scaring people into not moving there.
While looking for the tragic story of the woman that died while in the car with her newly-wedded husband on their way to the airport in one of the Big Dig tunnels in Boston, I was distracted by the Popular Searches on msn.com. Lo and behold there was Fresno City College. Hmmm, how odd.
Oh, wait, whadya know, more Fresno athletes have been accused of rape. What a shocker! Now it's not even the big-time Fresno State athletes, even the junior college boys are getting involved in the fun. Apparently they are only after junior high girls however (note: I am aware that 11-year-olds are actually in elementary school, but it sounded more clever).
Front page of Fresno Bee today has the headlines of the Fresno State Basketball player that murdered an 18-year-old girl; and the story about the 11-year-old girl.
Go Fresno!! You rock.

TC's wedding
The whole reason for traveling to Fresno earlier this month was for TC's wedding. One of my closest and dearest friends got hitched, old-school style (not like those friends of mine that run away to the virgin islands and only tell like two people...). Theresa and Eric had the whole fam-damnly there along with a healthy number of attendants on either side. The bridesmaids all wore matching dresses with some super stylish accessories (that were SO, very Theresa). There was even a chocolate fountain (i've heard those things are pricey).
Anyway, the wedding was a blast, fun, marvelous dancing and drinking good time. I got to spend more time with Theresa than I have in a couple of years. I felt honored and privileged that TC wanted to spend her wedding evening hanging out, talking and dancing with me.
oh, and for the record, despite that fact that I am horrified that there is video out there in the world of me crying and going on and on about how much i love Theresa, since it made her laugh I guess I wouldn't take it back.

Weekend in Fresno
Fabulous weekend in Fresno, or as fabulous as possible.
It's too late to get into the details, and there's quite a lot to say, but I figured I'd give a preview.
Saturday we got into town and went to D's water polo game after a huge breakfast at Sandy's Country Junction in the OTC:
That night we went to a smashing wedding, which I can't post pics of or really talk about until TC gets back from her Italian honeymoon.
Sunday was spent eating and resting (and working!! i had so much proofreading work to do while there it was out of control). Sunday evening I met up with my dear friend Heidi and then hung out with Mary and some of the Pier 1 crew:
Monday we attempted to go to Yosemite and had to turn around because we couldn't get through the snow (so alex still has not seen yosemite - I guess we have another reason to go back to the 'no now.):
Tuesday we hit up some old skool mini golf at Blackbeards:

only two weeks
Until Fresno. Fresno, fresno, fresno, it's all that's on my mind.
Here is the list of eateries as of today:
Saturday Breakfast - Sandy's Country Junction
Saturday Lunch - Me 'n Ed's (The Canadian website)![]()
Saturday Snack - Robertitos (Alex can't get enough of the crunchy chicken tacos!
Sunday Breakfast - Uncle Harry's Bagels (peanut butter chocolate chip bagel, yummy)
Sunday Lunch - Plaza Ventana (Not the most authentic of mexican food, but I grew up on it and still crave it. Unfortunately they closed down the original, the one I truly loved.)
The rest of the places don't have specific eating times, but this list goes something like this:
Foster's Freeze (the one on the way to Yosemite)
El Cochinito Contento ![]()
Sam's Italian Deli (We did Piemonte's last time)
Shanghai - oh, yummy orange flavored chicken
Braun's Ice Cream - last time in Fresno I was crushed because two of their locations had gone out of business, on our way out of town though we drove by the one remaining ice ceram shop, they weren't open though :(

Watch out Fresno....
Here we come!!!
![]()
Alex and I got our tickets!! We will be in Fresno the 8th through the 12th. I can't wait to eat all of the delicious food. My sister told me they opened a new taco stand right by her apartment, and it's open 24 hours.
We're going because TC is getting married. Woo-hoo. Funny thing about TC. Her initials are not TC at all. They are actually TAL. One day though, probably 5 years after I had known her, she decided she wanted a nickname. For awhile we called her Tree, but that was boring, so somehow we made it TC, and she's been TC ever since. Of course I think I may be the only one that still calls her that.
Yay, I'm going to Fresno! It's funny how I can get so excited about a place that sucks so bad. What can I say though; you can take the girl out of fresno but you can't take the fresno out of the girl.
More later on the details of what and when we'll eat. Also, I think a trip to Yosemite and Forestiere Underground Gardens are in store this time around.

Fresno, You Know!
So, how about those Bulldogs, eh?
Good game on Saturday against USC. In honor of the Dawgs, I give you a
picture of my sister and I taken at the mall with Timeout, the Fresno St. mascot. I remember being so embarrassed taking this picture, but my little sister really wanted to and she was scared to sit on his lap by herself, alas, I gave in. You can see that my face is bright red with humiliation. I was so worried that one of my friends would see me at the mall with my mom and sister.
Today I'm proudly wearing my Fresno State Girls Rock t-shirt!
Also...Don't forget tomorrow is Thank God I'm Not In High School Anymore Day!! Post those pics!!!

Greetings From an Old Friend
About a week ago I was at the wedding of one of my very special friends, Bonnie. The wedding was fun and it was good to see people I hadn't seen in awhile. As we were leaving, I fell, hard. Not that this is a big surprise, as I tend to fall often. I was wearing fancy heeled boots and I was walking down a ramp and my feet flew out from under me. I landed flat on my back, got up and kept walking.
A week went by and I was in pain. My butt hurt so bad, it was hard to sit, walk, and stand. I was beginning to think I had either broken or badly bruised my tailbone. It took me awhile to put the pieces together and link the pain back to the fall. At first I thought my butt muscles were just sore because I had walked to work in heels twice in one week (my 1.5 mile each way, uphill both ways, walk). Soon enough though I started to realize the pain was under the butt, not in the muscles.
Anyway, I started joking about needing a doughnut pillow to carry around with me. This reminded me of an old friend, a good friend I once had. When I was in the 8th grade and she in the 7th, we didn't know each other too well. One morning while waiting for the bus to take us to our nerd school, Computech, she came up riding her bike and trying to show off by doing a wheelie. Well, let's just say she was wheelie-ing a little too close to the curb, down she went landing straight on her ass. There she was, in the 7th grade having to carry a doughnut pillow around with her at school.
This friend and I both ended up moving to a new school the following year and became good friends. We were definitely the odd ones at our new nazi school. We stayed friends through high school and were on mock trial together, in some plays together, and got to know eachother's families fairly well.
I "lost" contact with pretty much everyone I went to high school with - lost really means I just didn't put any energy into keeping up these relationships. I was so happy to be out I didn't want to look back. Now, it makes me just a little sad to have lost that part of me.
This last weekend, I found something that belonged to this friend of mine. I figured it was time I look her up. Thankfully she's on her way to becoming a big shot attorney, as we always knew she would, so it was easy to find her.
It's brought all sort of great warm & fuzzy feelings to me today. I hope that she holds as many warm memories of me as I do of her. I regret not valuing the friendships of my youth. I spent too much time wanting to grow up. There are a few people out there in the world that I want to have back by my side. Maybe it's too late, maybe I'll make newer better friends, or maybe, just maybe all people suck.

My First Managerial Job
When I was 18 years old I quit my first job. I had worked at a retirement community for three years. I, at that young of an age, had been there longer than 90% of the other employees and they wouldn't let me have Christmas off to go to Disneyland with my family. So, I gave my two-week notice and then called in sick from a payphone at The Happiest Place on Earth.
After I got back, I was unemployed for the next three or four months. Finally, a friend of mine got me a job at Shanghai Chinese Cuisine, a very popular Chinese restaurant in Fresno. I started as a hostess. I had to wear a very tight Chinese silk dress and seat people. I eventually moved up to cashier, busser and then server. After a wrist injury and I couldn't serve any longer, Mr. Soo promoted me to assistant manager (it was also after I threatened to quit many times).
Anyway, I spent a good portion of the following three years working at Shanghai and eating their delicious food (I think I tried to quit that place at least three or four times but they always talked me in to coming back). It is still my favorite Chinese restaurant.
I took Alex there while we were in Fresno. We went with my grandma, sister, and friend Kathie. They have the best orange-flavored chicken I have ever tasted.

The Happy Pig
There was only one thing on my mind as we coasted down Highway 99 in our rental car: El Cochinito Contento. We didn't even have time to check in at our hotel first. I was so excited, I could hardly contain myself. We exited at Olive Street, cruised past Roeding Park, I could already feel the heat trying to worm it's way through the closed windows into the car. I knew that the wall of 110 degree heat was only moments away from knocking me on my ass. We pulled up to the intersection just west of El Cochinito and were lucky enough to see some awesome 3-wheel motion. What a wonderful welcome into Fresno.
We pulled in the parking lot and opened our car doors, BHAM!! There it was, my old friend heat. I love that feeling. I used to love driving around with the A/C on full blast freezing your brains out and then stepping into the wall. It is so tangible, so real, so hot. It feels good for about 10 seconds and then you want to die.
This is also how the "air conditioning" in El Cochinito feels. At first, walking in from the 110 degree heat the swamp coolers inside this run-down restaurant actually feel like they are cooling you off. After you adjust however, they just make you sweat, especially when you combine it with Corona and salsa.
Within 10 minutes of sitting down, an old friend of mine walked in accompanied by two people I didn't know. I said hi to Jon, introduced him to Alex and told him that this was my first stop off the freeway in Fresno. Turns out that his friend had just got into town and this was their first stop too.
Anyway, the food was amazing, delicious, outstanding, spicy, lardful, and filling. The downside, we left the camera in the car and it was way too hot to go outside and get it, so we are left with camera-phone pictures.

Fresno Food Vacation
I guess I lost interest in my Fresno Food Adventure after I actually ate the foods. So, two months late, I'm posting my pictures & stories of the delicious food we ate and my (almost) only reason for ever returning to the 'No.
I introduce to you, Me-N-Ed's pizza. This is my most favorite pizza. The crust is really thin and crispy, cooked with a little bit of cornmeal on the bottom. Always cooked with fresh ingredients.
My brother and I like Me-N-Ed's so much that when we found out that someone had opened one just outside of Vancouver, BC, we wanted to drive to Canada just to eat dinner.
To be honest, it wasn't quite as good as I remembered, but that may also be the fact that I was cramming 10 meals into 48 hours...
You will also notice the finger in the pictures, oops.

while in fresno
I went into this cafe to get some iced tea. I had this turquoise flowered purse with me (most of you know the one) and the girl at the counter asked me where I got it. A lot of people ask me where I got this purse, i get compliments on it quite often. It's really nothing special, I reply, "The Gap."
She said, "I try not to shop at the Gap."
I remember feeling this way. I remember how Fresno makes you want to rebel against the "big chain stores." However, what I want to ask her is, Where the hell do you shop?
There is nothing but big chain stores. There is nothing but the Gap. Do you shop only at thrift stores? Aren't half of those clothes originally form the Gap or Old Navy anyway. It's not as though they have an American Apparel where you know that everything was made sweatshop free, etc.
Do you by your clothes at Sears? Maybe she likes to wear toughskins?
And now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think she said, "I try not to shop at the Gap."
I think she said, "I try to avoid the Gap." Like it's the fucking plague or something. Or like it could happen anyway.
Things I try to avoid:
Getting hit by a car.
Burning my mouth on hot coffee.
Getting fat.
Falling down the stairs.
See, now that was a good example. I try to avoid falling down the stairs, but sometimes it happens anyway. It really sucks when it does, and maybe I could have been more careful, but I tried to avoid it.
You don't try to avoid the Gap. You either do or you don't. Yes, I'm sorry you live in Fresno and want to get out. But seriously, I remember that need-to-leave feeling and that need to try to do everything opposite of the norm in Fresno. It's hard living in a city that has Alan Autry as a mayor and a city that has new strip malls every week. However, I think you need to accept that, embrace that, make it your own, do what you can to improve your quality of life, or just get the hell out. Stop avoiding things, stop making excuses and leave.
I left Fresno with a new appreciation for it. Life there is easy, simple. No parking problems, no traffic, cheap food on every corner. Not only that, but people don't expect as much out of you. And whenever you feel down, remember, Fresno used to be cool:
![]()
However, I do have one problem, can someone tell Fresno that it's okay to go out drinking on Mondays???
on another note, some pics of fresno:

I am so sorry, Robertito's, please forgive me.
I can't believe I forgot Robertito's my favorite 24-hour mexican drive-thru restaurant. Oh, how could I? When my sister flew up here a couple weeks ago I made her buy me a bean and cheese burrito from Robertito's before she got on the plane to bring to me. She, unfortunately, left it in her fridge so I didn't get to eat it, but I was close, very close, to getting my yummy burrito.
Now I didn't expect them to have a website, at all, but they are freakin' famous, shouldn't someone have taken the time to write a damn review??!! AAAHHH so frustrated.

Hi, Fresno, this is Technology.
My love/hate relationship with Fresno continues. I was trying to compile an interactive list of all the restaurants I want to eat at while I'm in town with Alex in August, when it became realized that Fresno is not so interactive. I can't think of very many places that I frequent in Seattle that don't have their own websites. Most people I know have their own websites. The restaurants, coffee shops & stores that don't have websites at least have profiles on sites such as Citysearch. So, yes, a few of them did have websites, and I'm sure you will be just a impressed by them as I am. In the mean time, I have made a new goal for myself. I will go to the Fresno City search and enter information about every place listed that I possibly can. I think people deserve to know and I have a lot of free time on my hands at the moment.
So here goes my Not-so-interactive List of Restaurants to eat at in Fresno:
1. Shanghai Chinese Cuisine - This is one of my favorite sites. I was in absolute shock and hysterics to find out that Shanghai had a website. This is the Chinese restaurant that I spent 3 years of my life working and eating at. It has completely ruined my ability to eat most Chinese food. I don't know if it's as good as I think it is, but the orange flavored chicken, chinese chicken salad (yes, very american, I realize this), braised green beans and ginger chicken are to die for. Also the hot chicks in chinese dresses that greet you at the door.
2. DiCicco's - The best salad dressing & calzoni. I have yet to find a good calzone in Seattle. The thing about DiCicco's however is that they are all different, so I can only eat at the one on N. Cedar. This is the one that my family went to at least one Sunday a month after church.
3. Uncle Harry's Bagelry - A local chain of bagel shops that, until I moved to Seattle, I thought made decent coffee too. They have this peanut butter chocolate chip bagel that is delicious. Also you can get bagels with creams cheese and tomato slices, yummy.
4. Me-n-Eds Pizza - To my surprise while looking this place up I came to find out that there are Me-n-ed's pizzerias in the Vancouver area of Canada. The only place they exist out of Central California. I'm considering driving there this weekend. They have the best pizza of all time.
5. El Cochinito Contento - My favorite mexican restaurant in Fresno. Supposedly there are better ones, but this is my personal favorite.
6. Sam's Italian Deli or Piemonte's Deli - I really am having the worst time deciding which of these places I like better. I think the food at Sam's is better but the atmosphere at Piemonte's is better...picture Grandma Piemonte sitting on a stool and her 60-year-old, never-been-married son running the register, both of which are nearly deaf and you've gotta give them some credit, they at least try to have a website.
Anyway, I don't really remember where my mind was when this entry started, I think I had a plan and a focus...maybe it will come to me again some day.

Frito Boat Follow-up
As for the frito boats, i have figured out the mystery. After doing a lttle googling and polling i have discovered why i thought everyone in the world had heard of frito boats. I'm pretty sure that they were invented by the California school districts as a school lunch. I sent an e-mail to all of my friends from various places throughout California and they all knew what frito boats are, they all (except one) assumed everyone in the united states knows what they are, and most of them said they LOVED them (and that wasn't one of my questions).
Do a google search for frito boats and you find blogs that talk about them (written by people from central cali), school lunch menus, and various bars and snack bars that serve them on the menu. There are various descriptions on how to make them but I must say, I have NEVER cut open a bag of fritos and pured the chili directly in.
So, for those of you whom have yet to discover what a frito boat is, it's fritos with chili poured over them, topped with cheese and onions. I personally prefer green onions, cheddar cheese & tapatio.
Next Sunday dinner it's all about the frito boat. You don't like it, you don't come.

Why did i ever leave this place?
Yes, there are grocery stores.
"Fresno is the largest American city not served by a single Interstate or U.S. Highway"
These are the people i love to go riding with when i'm at home.
As if it's not bad enough to have Arnold as the governator.
